D Day at Adderley Village Hall – 8 June 2024

Saturday the 8th June was D Day at Adderley Village Hall. There was a superb transformation of the hall and all credit to Phil & Carol Gadd and Ben Wrathall.

We entered through war time posters and heritage boards showing Adderley at war, the Home Guard and the prisoners of war at Adderley Hall working on the farms.

Through from the bar into the main room via a camouflaged net tunnel an impressive sight greeted us with the 13 flags of all the D Day participating countries hanging from the walls and the illuminated “Lest we Forget Soldiers”.

Flags, poppies and mess tins were on the tables. The stage was set with TV screens showing a rolling sequence of the beaches and the landings.

Andrew Swindale gave a short talk on D Day and its vital role in liberating Western Europe and the role of The Kings Shropshire Light Infantry and their part in taking the German surrender from Grand Admiral Dönitz on the 7th of May 1945.

Music was provided by the excellent Terry and his TJQ band of keyboard, saxophonist and Jan singing all the old songs plus some pre-war jazz.

Food was provided by a team from “Master Chef” with recipes from the ration book and consisted of hot pot and bread and butter followed by a delicious array of appropriate puds:  bread and butter pudding, trifle, pineapple upside down cake, apple pie, fruit salad and poor man’s pudding.

Thanks to Paul and Val Nash for providing the Heritage Boards for the D Day event.

The bar was selling well and there had to be an emergency resupply of Guinness which entailed Phil travelling to rear entrance at Morrisons.

Thank you to all who helped to make this D Day evening so entertaining and memorable.

Its hard to believe but its time for Coffee again!

Coffee Morning Header
Cakes

Yes, last Saturday in the month is this Saturday 25th May, and that’s Coffee Morning, 10.30-12 in the village hall.

There are always lush cakes, good conversation and the chance to find out a bit about what’s going on in the village or just catch up with friends.

If you are new to the village, or you have neighbours who are new to the village, why not bring them along to the village hall.  You can be sure of a warm welcome and the chance to meet a few lovely people.  If you know someone lives on their own and may feel a bit anxious about coming along without some moral support why not offer to pick them up?  Its hard to walk into a room on your own so if you would like to come but want someone to meet you just ring Val Nash on 07814 071 254 and she will sort something for you.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Adderley Heritage Trail Launch Event – nearly here!

As you know Adderley has been fortunate enough to receive a grant from Heritage Lottery Fund to save a valuable collection of archive material capturing the history of Adderley back as far as 1066. This collection has been created by Geoff Butter who grew up in Adderley and loves the history of our village.

Next Saturday 27th April at 11.00 am there will be an official launch of the Adderley Heritage Trail and another chance to view even more  of the materials and history of our lovely village.  The event will be open to people to drop in until 2.00 pm so plenty of time for everyone.  A light buffet will be provided.  The event will be in the village hall, and everyone in the village has had an invitation as well as a large number of ex residents.

The response has been overwhelming with replies from people in and outside the village, and the hall is going to be packed with people helping us to celebrate the achievement of the Trail and the website which allows everyone to see the vast collection.  You will also be able to hear what is still left to do.

A whole host of new material is being brought to the hall next Saturday by these visitors which will enable us to add it to this wonderful collection.

If you haven’t looked at the heritage website yet, you can find it here:  www.adderleyheritage.co.uk

Slamming!

Last week we posted information about communications from BT saying that they thought we were leaving them for another supplier. We later learned that people with Sky were also affected by these spurious e-mails. If you missed it you can read the piece here.

We contacted BT who said they didn’t know who had requested the change (companies can do that?) but they had cancelled it. Then on Wednesday we had a letter through the post telling us, again, that we were leaving BT. We contacted them again and, yes, the system said we were leaving to a company called IVS, who don’t seem to exist. This time we escalated, got an apology and reassurances that it was definitely cancelled.

What happened next? We were put in touch with OfCOM. They told us that the practice was called Slamming where a third party cancelled your line without your permission and then offers you a new service. How can this happen? OfCOM are now investigating. If you have been a victim of this Slamming you are urged to contact OfCOM 0207 981 3040. They were very helpful and have promised a response in the next 5 days. We wait and see.
